Shopping List

Here's a list of things I look for on grocery shopping trips that I would recommend to anyone...I'll try to provide a little information on most of the items on this list.  Hope this is helpful in assisting you make some informed decisions at the grocery store!

Grains

- Brown rice
- Quinoa
- Flax seed

Fruits

- Apples
- Bananas
- Berries of all varieties (our favorites are blueberries, blackberries and strawberries)
- Grapefruit

Dairy or substitutes, eggs

- Organic soy milk
- Fat-free skim milk
- Eggland's Best Omega-3 eggs

Meats

- Chicken breast, lean, hormone-free
- Ground turkey, 93% lean (Walmart sells very reasonably-priced 3 lb. packages)
- Deli Turkey, natural, low sodium (We've been using the DiLusso brand)

Vegetables

Fresh
- Cilantro
- Roma tomatoes (usually the cheapest, and I find the most versatile)
- Yellow onions (can be bought in 3-5 lb. bags)
- Lettuce
- Spinach
- Garlic cloves
- Green, Yellow and Red Pepper

Frozen, to cook for quick meals
- Green Beans
- Peas
- Corn
- Broccoli florets
- Mixed Vegetables (green beans, peas, corn and carrots)

Legumes

- Garbanzo Beans (dry, in 1 lb. bags)
- Black Beans (dry, in 1 lb. bags)
- Kidney Beans (dry, in 1 lb. bags)
- Black-Eyed Peas (dry, in 1 lb. bags)

Condiments

- Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Balsamic Vinegar
- Salsa (canned is fine, but the fresher the better, as the ingredients will only be healthier)
- Dijon Mustard (read the food label to choose the healthiest brand)

Spices

- Sea salt
- Black pepper
- Curry powder
- Chili powder
- Ground cumin
- Oregano
- Basil
- Granulated garlic
- Cinnamon
- Paprika
- Cayenne pepper (contains a significant amount of antioxidants)
